PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Senior Network Engineer will provide hands-on solutions in the definition, development and support of the architecture and technologies supporting the enterprise.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the senior level of the Network Engineer series. At this level, work may be performed under limited supervision or under limited direction. Incumbent possesses considerable latitude to accomplish tasks, which may include lead worker or supervisor duties.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED
- Receives supervision from departmental management/supervisory level roles.
- No formal supervisory responsibilities; may lead the work of lower level staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Agency’s technology infrastructure, including servers running Hypervisor technology (Vmware VCenter and ESXi), application and database servers (Windows Server, Linux/SQL, Oracle), storage solutions (HPE Nimble), underlying networking infrastructure (Cisco) and communication solutions (VoIP).
- Prepare the long term and tactical planning for infrastructure capacity ensuring that capacity will meet current and future application and transaction processing requirements.
- Define strategic and tactical technology solutions, justify and implement these solutions and ensures the computing infrastructure in place is stable and available to meet the needs of the organization.
- Manage and ensure the successful deployment of operating system and application patching on a monthly interval.
- Ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of information systems by troubleshooting and resolving system performance and automation issues.
- Plan, develop, install, configure, maintain, support and optimize all computing, storage, and supporting devices both on premise and in the cloud.
- Develop and manage relationships with technology solution providers and control the cost of the agency’s technology infrastructure.
- Prepare technical specifications and procedures for hardware, software and network applications.
- Provide ongoing coordination in the analysis, acquisition and installation of hardware and software elements of the technical infrastructure. Define, apply and enforce standards and technology methodologies.
- Coordinate the design, administration, operations, and support of IT infrastructure to achieve established availability and service levels.
- Assist in the installation and testing of new applications, operating systems and upgrades to ensure compatibility with overall networking operations.
- Collaborate with users to determine design specifications or details for system upgrades.
- Plan and writes reports, memorandums, and instructional manuals as documentation of operating system and application configurations.
- Assist in identifying, evaluating and managing third party vendors, technology or processes for integrating with SCRRA technology and equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems, Business Information Systems or a related field.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of work experience with both hardware and software accountability
- A combination of training, education and or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered when determining minimum qualifications. Advanced relevant coursework may also substitute for a portion of required experience.
- A valid class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record of no more than three moving violations and no DUI’s within the last three years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cisco CCNA or CCNP certifications or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Next Generation firewalls and management (Palo-Alto PA 3220-3230)
- Windows Server (2012-2019), Linux (Redhat-Oracle Linux), VMware(Vcenter, ESXi 6-7), Windows 10.
- Spam filtering Solutions like Proofpoint; Antivirus (Symantec SPAM, CrowdStrike).
- Networking principles, concepts, and technologies.
- Major routing protocols and when to apply them.
- Business process design, documentation and execution, conversions/interfaces, testing and successful implementation.
- Storage Area Network design and administration.
- Current network security methods, penetration testing tools, preventative methods, and countermeasures.
- Windows and Linux operating system principles.
- Principles and best practices for backup, disaster recovery and business continuity.
Skilled in:
- Office 365 products (Exchange, Sharepoint, etc.), Azure and similar Cloud technologies.
- Proficiency in Office 365 suite (Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft World, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.)
- Active Directory management, DNS, DHCP, Radius, Group Policy Objects, etc.
- Recognizing, troubleshooting, and resolving technical and/or operational issues as related to infrastructure.
- Organization, multi-tasking, and effective time management.
Ability to:
- Translate requirements into technical solutions, establish formal support and performance agreements and plans, and meet business objectives through the implementation and support of appropriate technical solutions.
- Provide prompt and courteous responses to customer inquiries and suggestions and solve practical to complex technical problems.
- Gather, assess, prioritize and analyze information from various sources in order to make good operational decisions.
- Work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams including management, operations, and technical support staff.
- Create effective reports and presentations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Transition between a stationary position at a desk or work location and move about Metrolink facilities or other work site locations.
- Operate tools to perform the duties of the position; such as computers, office equipment and work-related machinery.
- Transport equipment or boxes up to 25lbs.
- Exchange ideas by means of communication.
- Visual acuity to detect, identify and observe employees or train movement and any barriers to movement when working on or near railroad tracks.
- Hear and perceive the nature of sounds when working on or near railroad tracks.
- Balance, ascend/descend, climb, kneel, stoop, bend, crouch or crawl within assigned working conditions and or locations
Working Conditions
Position requires work in a normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, or temperature. Work may also be conducted in outdoor environments, at construction sites, Railroad Track and Right-of-Way environments, and warehouse environments, with possible exposure to individuals who are hostile or irate, moving mechanical parts, and loud noises (85+ decibels, such as heavy trucks, construction, etc.).
