Deschutes County is accepting applications for a Building Safety Inspector III, Plans Examiner. This position will examine and approve building construction plans and specifications for proposed construction projects, and make determinations for compliance to applicable codes.  Position will also review comprehensive permit applications for completeness and accuracy; seek compliance with codes from contractors and others; provide information requested by contractors; maintain supporting office records; and issue notices of code violations. This position works within a scope of thorough knowledge in structural, mechanical, plumbing and/or electrical aspects, combined with a working knowledge of residential and commercial construction.

High school diploma or equivalent (GED); AND two (2) years of post-high school technical training; OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the job.  

This position requires possession of an A-level Oregon plans examiner certification with Fire & Life Safety endorsement from the State of Oregon, Building Codes Division.

Must have skill to:  

• Examine, interpret and evaluate plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
• Interpret legal and code requirements and respond to inquiries within scope of knowledge.
• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with customers of all levels of expertise, including contractors, designers, tradesmen and homeowners.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others at all times.
• Work independently as well as in a team setting.
• Maintain supporting office records including inspections and notices of code violations.
