NCM Engineering Corporation is currently seeking an assistant engineer for the Irvine office who will be responsible for entry-level design tasks and is ready to advance soon to the next career level. This position reports to a registered civil engineer.

The Irvine office works primarily roadway and freeway design projects for public-sector clients in Orange, Los Angeles, and Riverside Counties.

Responsibilities

As an assistant engineer at NCM, you will be responsible for supporting one or more teams with engineering design tasks while developing the skills necessary to advance your career to the next level.

You will work closely with one or more project engineers, senior engineers or managers, who will provide support and oversee your work. Our work encompasses all phases of the design process, including writing project reports and studies; preparing plans, specifications and estimates; providing construction support services; and performing inspections and maintenance support. The following list provides some examples of typical responsibilities for this role. Your actual responsibilities may vary depending on the specific projects you support.

• Contribute to the design of local roadway or state highway improvement projects by preparing plans, specifications, special provisions and cost estimates
• Be familiar with and use standard references, plans, specifications and guidelines to complete design tasks
• Perform technical calculations in support of design
• Use CADD best practices to draft engineering drawings
• Participate in the quality control process by reviewing your own work (a self-check) or the work of others
• Perform other design-related tasks, as required, such as researching utility records, preparing technical reports and conducting field visits

You may support projects outside the Orange, Los Angeles, and Riverside Counties, but extensive travel is not anticipated for this position. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, environmental or construction engineering
• Proficiency in the basic Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel and Outlook
• Strong oral communication skills for working effectively with other team members, managers, clients, subconsultants and stakeholders as the project may require
• Strong written communication skills for preparing technical reports, reviewing technical writing and preparing emails, memos and other written communications
• Strong attention to detail and dedication to learning, developing and implementing quality control/quality assurance procedures and best practices
• Ability to handle a workload of multiple concurrent projects, prioritize effectively and meet tight deadlines

Positive Considerations

• 1 or more years of experience and demonstrated proficiency in InRoads or AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Proficiency in other Microsoft Office programs including Access, PowerPoint and Project
• Experience in a broad range of settings including field work, construction management and inspections to bring a well-rounded background and skill set to this role
