| The Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering (CHME) at New Mexico State University (NMSU) is seeking a Department Head who can contribute to the strategic goal of R1 status in support of LEADS 2025, while ensuring curricular efficiencies and student success. S/he will strengthen the links between chemical engineers, the traditional sciences, and enhance interdisciplinary and collaborative research with other allied disciplines on campus. The faculty and staff in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering enjoy a great sense of community and are ready to welcome a visionary leader dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds are welcomed. In addition to providing effective supervision of the faculty and staff, the Department Head is expected to represent the department across the college and develop strong relationships with industry representatives, the development office government sponsors, alumni, and the department’s advisory board. CHME seeks to grow programs, curricula, and research that emphasize technology development with a focus on energy, advanced materials, biomedicine, environmentally responsible processing, and brewing. This leadership position will help grow programs that prepare students for careers within these foci and build knowledge base related to materials, fuels, foods, biomass, chemicals, and human health.

Candidates should have a strong background in a field that impacts new directions in chemical engineering. They can have degrees in chemical engineering, engineering, or in a discipline that has led to the candidate’s involvement in professional organizations with chemical engineering members, and a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree. Qualified applicants for the position are expected to have a strong publication record in emerging fields, articulate a vision for growing the research enterprise, and build strong relationships with academic departments and research centers across campus, as well as external constituencies including alumni and corporations. Applicants must be committed to quality undergraduate and graduate education including mentoring. A successful candidate should possess an outstanding and demonstrable record of leadership, undergraduate and graduate teaching in engineering, student mentoring and advising, and a sustained and successful externally funded research program to warrant an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure in the department. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are required, as is a strong commitment to supporting and promoting a diverse and inclusive working and learning environment.
