The work involves responsibility for the performance of a wide variety of complex professional engineering duties of considerable magnitude and importance in the Department of Public Works. The work is carried out in accordance with standard, well established and accepted professional engineering methods, techniques, and procedures and involves the primary oversight and personal performance of design, inspection, and certification activities for County bridge construction and reconstruction projects. Acting as an engineering consultant to the Commissioner of Public Works, the incumbent may be consulted on any matter requiring professional engineering expertise, including County road and landfill projects. Supervision will be exercised over engineering staff and oversight of the field work to ensure that designs are followed and specifications are adhered to. Work is performed under the general direction of the Commissioner of Public Works, with wide leeway allowed the incumbent for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments and activities, because of the specialized, technical, and professional-level nature of the work performed. Duties are usually performed in close conjunction with supervisors of the various divisions of the Department of Public Works, with the Professional Engineer giving advice as needed, monitoring results, and performing inspections. Day-to-day supervision of project crews is usually not a feature of this class. Does related work as required.
