The Engineering Assistant Trainee/I/II is responsible to perform paraprofessional and technical engineering work in connection with engineering design and development review projects, Capital Improvement Projects, traffic engineering, utility system engineering and engineering related studies; to provide technical assistance to engineering personnel; and to provide direction to contractors, consultants, developers and the public regarding City standards and applicable laws, rules and regulations.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Engineering Assistant Trainee – This is the trainee level in the Engineering Assistant series. Positions in this class have no directly related work experience. The Engineering Assistant Trainee is distinguished from the I level by the lack of job-related knowledge or experience. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning the basic knowledge required of the job, progressing to the I level once they have acquired such knowledge and upon the demonstrated ability to perform tasks as assigned.
Engineering Assistant I – This is the entry level class in the Engineering Assistant series. Positions in this class typically have little related work experience and lack the ability to perform the full range of duties independently. The Engineering Assistant I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to the general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Trainee level.
Engineering Assistant II – This is the journey level class in the Engineering Assistant series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual, or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

Experience:
None required. Experience related to field or office engineering is desirable.
Training:
Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
Engineering Assistant I
Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing field and office engineering duties equivalent to Engineering Assistant Trainee with the City of Modesto.
Training:
Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
Engineering Assistant II
Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible experience equivalent to Engineering Assistant I with the City of Modesto.
Training:
Completion of an Associate’s degree with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
Possession of an Engineer–in–Training Certificate (EIT) is desirable.
