The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking applicants for a utility and construction permit engineer at the Kalamazoo Transportation Service Center (TSC). This position provides an ideal mix of working in the office and in the field, coordinating utility relocations for highway construction. Are you a self-motivated engineer looking for a challenge? It offers a wide variety of tasks that vary from reviewing a new commercial development site plan to coordinating the relocation of electric lines for a new traffic signal. This position functions within the Transportation Service Center (TSC) for utility and permit engineering with additional work in the areas of design, construction administration, and traffic and safety. This position requires meeting tight deadlines and resolving issues to ensure the successful implementation and operation of MDOT services and products. Successful and continuing customer contact is a requirement for this position.

Required Education and Experience
Education
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
Experience
Transportation Engineer 9
No specific type or amount is required.
Transportation Engineer 10
One year of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.
Transportation Engineer P11
Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.
Transportation Engineer 12
Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to
a Transportation Engineer P11.
Alternate Education and Experience
Transportation Engineer 9 - 12
Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.

Position may be filled at the 9, 10, P11 or 12 level based on the preferred candidate’s qualifications. The “Salary” listed in this posting is a range and reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level and the maximum rate at the advanced (12) level. The pay rate provided to the preferred candidate will be dependent on the level in which they are found qualified. New employees typically will be quoted at the minimum rate of pay for the level in which they are found qualified, and their pay will increase in increments based on evolution to the next level and satisfactory performance.
