The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics seeks applicants for a tenure-track Aerospace Engineering faculty position, preferably at the assistant or associate professor level. The Department’s most urgent needs are in the following disciplines of Hypersonics (Aeronautical Engineering), Aerospace Materials and Structures (Mechanical/Materials Engineering), Controls (general Aerospace Engineering), and Design Optimization (general Aerospace Engineering). While candidates with expertise in these disciplines will be given preference, outstanding candidates with specializations relevant to other areas of Aerospace Engineering will be considered.
Teaches graduate-level courses in aerospace engineering in the areas of Hypersonics, Aerospace Materials and Structures, Controls, or Design Optimization, which form parts of accredited Master’s and doctoral degree programs, as well as parts of professional continuing education programs.
Develops courses and sequences of courses in aerospace engineering for degree programs and continuing education, which meet the Air Force's dynamic educational needs.
Plans and executes a program of research in aerospace engineering within the area of Hypersonics, Aerospace Materials and Structures, Controls, or Design Optimization; works directly with Air Force and Department of Defense (DoD) organizations to meet research needs; collaborates and works well with colleagues to accomplish individual and organizational research goals; regularly publishes research results in archival journals and technical conferences; and plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates research programs of master’s and doctoral students.
Provides authoritative consultation in one or more areas of aerospace engineering to Air Force and DoD organizations.
Mentors and manages the educational progress of MS and PhD students. Provides annual written feedback on MS and PhD students as prescribed by Air Force and AFIT Operating Instructions.
QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Doctorate degree in Astronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is required, with emphasis in the areas of Hypersonics, Aerospace Materials and Structures, Controls, or Design Optimization. Demonstrated professional knowledge of foundational and advanced topics associated with aerospace engineering. Faculty in any of these areas will have at least a year of formal education and a year of research in these areas beyond the Masters of Science degree. Possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters.
At the Assistant Professor Rank: For an initial appointment to the academic rank of Assistant Professor, applicants should have a strong potential for both teaching and research at the graduate level. Applicants should have a distinguished academic record and the background, commitment, and desire to teach graduate classes, conduct research, and publish.
At the Associate Professor Rank: In addition to the criteria for an Assistant Professor, an initial appointment to the academic rank of Associate Professor must be based on convincing evidence that the individual has demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The candidate must have 5 years of significant professional experience after having earned the doctoral degree. This will normally include no fewer than 3 years of full-time, university-level teaching at the Assistant Professor rank or higher. Alternatively, for those with fewer than 3 years of teaching experience, the requirement is 6 years of significant professional experience with research credentials normally expected of a full Professor.
At the Full Professor Rank:In addition to the criteria for an Associate Professor, an initial appointment to the academic rank of Professor must be based on convincing evidence that the faculty member has a sustained record of excellence in teaching, has produced a significant body of scholarship that is recognized nationally or internationally, and has demonstrated leadership in service to the discipline. The candidate must have a minimum of 10 years of significant professional experience after having earned the doctoral degree. This will normally include no fewer than 6 years of full-time, university-level teaching with a minimum of 3 years at the Associate Professor rank or higher. Alternatively, for those with fewer than 6 years of teaching experience, the requirement is 10 years of significant professional experience with research credentials substantially more than those normally expected of a full Professor.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education is a basic requirement for this position. You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

This is a Tenure Track position. Academic tenure is based upon performance and approval of the faculty and may be considered after the initial or subsequent 3-year appointment period. Selectee may be offered an initial appointment with tenure if their academic credentials warrant such action.

Additional Salary Information: Faculty salary is paid 10 out of 12 months annually, with remaining 2 months paid through research grants.
