The Director of Public Works directs all strategic planning, project management and operational functions for the Public Works Department at the City of Norwich. Scope of the position includes programs and services for highway, parks, storm sewer maintenance, all municipal solid waste collection and disposal, building maintenance, landfill, engineering services, vehicle maintenance, management of human resources, and capital improvement programs. Responsibilities include administrative responsibility for new construction, construction and maintenance of drainage, roads and other facilities. The Director of Public Works is also responsible for making difficult public works technical decisions.

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from a recognized college or university plus seven years of recent progressively responsible public works administration experience including at least three years in a supervisory capacity. Recent is defined as within the last five years. Must be a registered Professional Engineer. If registered in a state other than Connecticut, must obtain Connecticut registration within one (1) year from date of appointment. Demonstrated management and human resource skills. Demonstrated change management skills. Demonstrated commitment to professional development as evidenced by continued education or membership in professional organizations. Must have a valid CT driver’s license. If licensed in a state other than Connecticut, must obtain a Connecticut License within (6) months of appointment.
