The Department of Transportation offers a challenging work environment with potential assignments in a wide variety of transportation projects. Serves as a traffic engineer, performing safety and operational analyses of roadways and intersections. Assists in the management of traffic issues for Fairfax, while coordinating with other county agencies and VDOT reviewers. Evaluates multi-modal traffic engineering issues and develops and studies improvement alternates. Prepares study documents and makes presentations of technical work as required. Organizes resources to ensure that projects are technically correct and completed within the project schedule. Assists in the development of a county-wide spot improvement program Reviews data and performs field investigations to identify potential spot improvement projects throughout the County. Evaluates the existing conditions at the identified locations. Develops and determines the costs, benefits and feasibility of potential improvements to the multi-modal transportation network. Develops recommendations, documents and presents findings to County staff, VDOT, the public, and other stakeholders. Ensures that work is done following VDOT and industry standards. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: A valid driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ideal candidate will have extensive experience with traffic analysis using modeling software (Synchro, SimTraffic, Vissim, SIDRA, etc.); a broad knowledge base of transportation and traffic engineering principles and applicable regulations; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and officials on transportation issues; strong analytical and problem solving skills; excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities, and ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. P.E. and/or PTOE desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is generally sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items less than 25 pounds in weight. Conduct periodic field observations requiring standing, riding, and exposure to the elements (weather). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
