The Detroit, Michigan office of SmithGroup, named one of Southeast Michigan’s Top 100 Workplaces by the Detroit Free Press for 5 consecutive years (2013-2017), is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team. Our practices offer local, national and international projects of all sizes including opportunities with our other offices. Responsibilities include; but are not limited to:
Leads and performs analysis, design and documentation of small to medium heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, laboratory and process piping and controls.
Revises, reviews and coordinates construction documents.
Prepares, develops, and edits specifications.
Visits construction sites as required for observation, answer contractor questions, or representing the owner in preparing punch lists.
Prepares CA field observation reports.
Refines and further develops design concepts given by others.
Creates and develops planning and design concepts for more complex projects.
Oversees design work of others to ensure an integrated and cohesive design.
Supervises the development of materials for client presentations.
Manages the engineering discipline in one or more small to medium-sized projects (including negotiating project scope and fees, job production and quality, fee management, collection, and workplan) in coordination with the project manager.
Manages the engineering discipline in a portion of a large-sized project in coordination with the project manager.
Establish and maintain project staffing requirements consistent with contractual obligations.
Provides oversight and monitoring of the work performed by junior staff.
Follows and enforces quality control procedures.
Coordinates with consultants.
Develops trusted relationship with clients.
Mentors and trains junior and intermediate level staff.
Reviews RFP’s and determines submission requirements.
May assist in developing proposal materials.
May assist with business development activities.
Takes an active role in a local professional association.
An ideal candidate has:
5+ years of AE Mechanical Engineering experience; Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering; or equivalent combination of education and experience
PE License required
LEED AP preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite(with advanced knowledge of Word and Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and SharePoint
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealing with internal and external clients
SmithGroup offers competitive compensation and an excellent benefit package, including 401(k) and continuing educational reimbursement. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, and pay for 8 federal holidays. We also offer an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays) to help with work/life balance.
