The Department of Engineering Technology is seeking to fill a tenure track assistant professor, associate professor, or professor level position in manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology with emphasis in foundry, heat treatment and cast metals. The Department currently offers an Engineering Technology undergraduate degree with specializations in manufacturing, mechanical, electrical, civil and environmental engineering technology. The Department also offers undergraduate degrees in Construction Science and Management, Concrete Industry Management, and Technology Management. At the graduate level, a Master of Science degree is offered with a major in Technology Management and specializations in manufacturing, construction, and industrial management. The foundry and cast metals program has been continuously certified by the Foundry Education Foundation since 1990. In the spring of 2003, the Department moved into the Roy F. Mitte building, a 250,000 square foot facility. The Department is housed in a College of Science and Engineering, which is home to 6 academic departments and the Ingram School of Engineering. The College offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Materials Science Engineering and Commercialization.
The selected candidate will be expected to be an excellent instructor and to teach several undergraduate and graduate courses from some of the following areas: cast metals-foundry and heat treatment, material science & metallurgy, manufacturing processes, material removal, fabrication and assembly, CAD, CAM, quality assurance, and lean systems. The candidate will provide career counseling and academic advising to Engineering Technology and Technology Management majors. The candidate will manage a continuous student recruitment initiative, and will manage the existing cast metals internship program. The candidate will participate with other faculty in student learning outcomes assessment and on-going program accreditation efforts. The candidate is also expected to secure external funding, and to conduct and publish research relevant to cast metals technology, and related areas of manufacturing, appropriate for an emerging research institution. Engagement in service activities is also expected. Other requirements include sponsorship of the student chapter of the American Foundry Society (AFS), and serving as the Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) Key professor. A prominent feature of the selected candidate’s responsibilities will be travel with students to the FEF College Industry Conference and to Cast Expo annually. Additional travel of a more regional nature will be expected in support of student engagement with the Texas Chapter of AFS. Outreach to the foundry, steel making, and related manufacturing industries is also expected.
Required Qualifications: A doctoral degree in metallurgical engineering or metallurgy, or a doctoral degree in materials science engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or another closely related degree, if accompanied by demonstrated prior experience in cast metals technology and foundry practices. An undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering or metallurgy, or an undergraduate degree in materials science engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or another closely related degree, if accompanied by demonstrated prior experience in cast metals technology and foundry practices. Candidates with a degree(s) in metallurgical engineering or metallurgy will be given preference. Candidates having degrees in related engineering disciplines who possess demonstrated experience in cast metals technology and foundry practices will be given consideration. The successful candidate must possess excellent oral and written English language skills. To be considered for the ranks of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor, the candidate must meet the requirements for those ranks at Texas State University. Preferred Qualifications: Professional engineer licensure and/or certification(s), field experience in the foundry, cast metals, or steel industries, prior teaching experience, and a record of teaching that emphasizes hands-on, experiential, laboratory learning. An undergraduate degree from an ABET accredited program. Research interests in one or more of the following areas: the physical metallurgy of cast alloys, ferrous metallurgy, steelmaking and processing. Demonstrated experience cultivating research through industrial partnerships with the metal casting and steelmaking industries.
