ABOUT THE POSITION: Spokane Valley is seeking a highly qualified and enthusiastic employee to serve our City as a full-time Assistant Engineer in our Community Development and Public Works Department. The ideal candidate will support the City by performing duties associated with stormwater permit regulations, project planning/management/design, development review, transportation engineering, and will have exceptional technical skills, and a strong desire to provide superior service to both internal and external customers.
SELECTED EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: This position performs engineering support work in the office, as well as field engineering support for stormwater, environmental, transportation, utility, and other Public Works projects. May review applicable stormwater regulations and assist in developing, evaluating, and implementing tools and/or processes to meet those regulations. May review and inspect private project development plans for compliance with codes, regulations, and standards. May provide assistance in developing project specifications plan preparation, acceptance testing, evaluation of field conditions, design changes, and reports. Work may also include providing assistance in transportation planning, traffic modeling, street systems engineering, and traffic control evaluations.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Graduation from a four-year college or university in civil engineering or a closely related field; and minimum of two years professional civil engineering experience. An Equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; knowledge of applicable City policies, laws, and regulations affecting department activities; considerable skill in arriving at cost estimates on complex projects; some skill in basic drafting and surveying. Ability to prepare, organize and maintain engineering field and office data, reports and systems; as well as the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information, orally and in writing, to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials and the general public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid State driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment; must be physically capable of moving about construction work sites and lift up to 25 lbs. Registration as an Engineer In Training (EIT) is required or Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable. Successful completion of a background check, including a criminal check, is a requirement of employment at Spokane Valley. Experience in public works engineering, design and construction strongly preferred.
