Located in one of the most spectacular and scenic areas of Washington State and the entire United States, the City of Port Angeles, (pop. 19,000), is situated on the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula along the shore of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Olympic Peninsula is home to spectacular natural attractions ranging from a lush, magnificent rainforest, to rugged mountain splendor and wide ocean beaches. Port Angeles is a tourist destination and international gateway via ferry to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Last year Outdoor Magazine named Port Angeles as second in the nation in their “Best Town Ever” competition.
The Public Works and Utilities Department employs 93 FTE's and has a 2017 budget of $2.12 million. The Engineering Services Division of the Public Works and Utilities Department provides engineering planning, design, and construction management services for the city's utilities, Street Division, and other city departments, and provides inspection and permitting of work related to the public infrastructure, Geographical Information System mapping and database support, and traffic engineering services.
Under general direction of the Public Works Director, the City Engineer coordinates the integration of the office functions for all of the utilities, permitting activities, engineering services, and contracting, and plans, directs, and coordinates the strategic and long-term planning of the Water, and Wastewater Utilities, and acts as Director in his absence.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a four-year degree in engineering, or a closely related field, and registration as a Professional Engineer is required. Experience as a high level manager, including engineering and resource management responsibilities, preferably in an agency with multiple utilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with construction and/or professional services contracts is preferred. Possession of a valid Washington State driver license at the time of appointment (or ability to obtain one within 30 days) and a driving record acceptable to the city is required.
