Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor Position
Position description The Department of Civil and Water Engineering, Université Laval, invites applications from qualified candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor under the newly created Chair for Leadership in Teaching (CLT) of sustainable design and construction of aluminium structures. The successful candidate will be expected to:
Teach (or develop) undergraduate and graduate courses in the field of structural and materials engineering, especially in structural aluminium design and construction; The teaching of the fundamental principles of the design of structures using aluminium in a multi-material context and sustainable development will be highlighted; Knowledge of aluminium forming processes would be an asset;
Develop a strong, externally funded research program in the field of structural engineering, particularly in the sustainable design and construction of innovative aluminium structures, and also engage in the supervision of graduate students; Knowledge in the following areas would be considered an asset: life cycle cost analysis and eco-design;
Develop and participate in partnerships with industry, especially the aluminium and metal industry;
Undertake university administrative duties and participate fully in the collective responsibilities of the Engineering Faculty and Department.
The Department of Civil and Water Engineering is composed of 25 professors working in geotechnics, hydraulics, water and environment, structures and materials. It houses internationally recognized research chairs, research centres and research groups. It offers two undergraduate programs, one in civil engineering and the other in water engineering. There are currently over 560 undergraduate students and 170 graduate students.

Qualifications Candidates for the CLT will have to demonstrate pedagogical innovation and use of integrated teaching methods, combining classroom lectures with practical field training. They will be required to demonstrate a strong record of, or potential for, excellence in teaching, research, and graduate student supervision, particularly in the area of sustainable design and construction of aluminium structures. They must possess solid expertise in this field. Applicants must demonstrate the following:
hold a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering (or an equivalent degree) and have (or about to obtain) a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline;
strong record of, or evidence of potential for, developing and conducting a high caliber externally-funded research program;
strong record of, or evidence of potential for, excellence in teaching and development of innovative teaching methods in the relevant discipline;
strong interest in the leadership of the Chair for Leadership in Teaching (CLT) of sustainable design and construction of aluminium structures;
ability to work collaboratively with other researchers in the field of engineering and beyond;
good oral and written communication skills in French (or be strongly committed to develop them);
registration as a professional engineer of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (or be eligible for and committed to registration in the short term).
A demonstrated expertise and leadership in teaching and curricular innovation at the undergraduate and graduate levels will receive particular attention.
The selected candidate will be called upon to collaborate on teaching practices with two other holders of Chair for Leadership in Teaching (steel and wood). Likewise, this person will be called upon to collaborate with the department's researchers in the field of structures and materials in the context of infrastructures including several materials (steel, aluminium, concrete, wood and composite materials); He or she will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities at the Université Laval Structural Laboratory, which was partially funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and the Government of Quebec.
