The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University (NC State) invites applications for the position of Head of the Department of Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences
(FBNS). The Department Head has overall responsibility for the leadership and administration of all teaching, research, and extension activities in the department. The Department Head also has a key role in the recruitment and development of faculty and staff, oversees planning and evaluation of the
Department's academic, research, and extension programs, and is responsible for allocation and accountability of departmental budgets.
The Head will foster an environment of diversity and inclusion and promote mutually beneficial working relationships. The Head will be actively involved in fundraising to support the department's programs and other developmental activities and serve as the lead representative in interactions with college and university administrators, industry and commodity groups, and consumers. The Department Head is expected to promote collaborations and partnerships with other University departments as well as state, national, and international agencies.
This position will further have responsibilities with regard to several FBNS departmental faculty and staff members located at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, which also is the site of the new Food Science Processing and Innovation Center, as well as members at the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) facility at Morehead City. The Department Head position is viewed as a full-time administrative position.
About the Department FBNS has an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and extension at NC State University with 26 tenured or tenure-track faculty. The department is committed to guiding undergraduate and graduate education for professional and technical careers in food, bioprocessing, and nutritional sciences. The department offers undergraduate degree programs in Food Science (science and technology emphasis areas), Bioprocessing Science, Nutrition Science, and Applied Nutrition; and graduate degrees (M.S., Master of Food Science or Nutrition, and Ph.D.) in Food Science and Nutrition.
Major research programs include food safety and foodborne disease prevention, food manufacturing and entrepreneurship, and foods for health and well being. Affiliated research units include USDA-ARS laboratories, Southeast Dairy Foods Research Center, Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, Center for Advanced Processing and Packaging Studies, Plants for Human Health Institute, and USDA-NIFA Food
Virology Collaborative. The department's portfolio of education and training programs encompasses a wide variety of different disciplines and targets a diverse clientele. These programs strive to teach and train management/technical personnel who are working in industry, provide assistance to entrepreneurs, and advise regulatory stakeholders.
About The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences discovers, develops, teaches, and applies knowledge and technology that enable students, clientele, and citizens of North Carolina and others to improve the quality of their lives and to enhance the agricultural, economic, environmental, and social well-being of the state and world and to create and extend new knowledge through scientific research and extension in agriculture and life sciences. The assets beyond the main campus include research stations, 4H camps, extension offices, field labs, research forests, and other miscellaneous mission-supporting facilities.
Qualifications Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Food Science, Nutrition, Bioprocessing Science, Food Engineering, or a closely related discipline. He/she should currently hold the rank of Professor with tenure and have a record of outstanding professional achievement in their field. Candidates must demonstrate previous administrative experience, effective communication skills and team building capabilities, possess a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and extension, and be able to articulate the vision of the department within the context of a land-grant university. The successful candidate must be able to support and mentor faculty and foster effective interdisciplinary scholarship.
