The Laskowski lab in the Department of Biology invites applications for the position of laboratory research assistant in plant developmental genetics with emphasis on root architecture. This is a non-continuing, 12-month, grant-funded Administrative and Professional Staff position expected to be filled at 1.0 FTE or 0.75 FTE. The position will report to Professor of Biology Marta Laskowski.
The research assistant will: prepare Arabidopsisthaliana lines, which includes planting, watering, crossing, harvesting, genotyping, and maintaining an accurate lab notebook; prepare and autoclave solutions; sterilize seeds and grow plants on sterile media; and assist as needed in other laboratory work on the project. After a brief training period, the technician will work independently to maintain basic running of the laboratory including ordering supplies, maintaining glassware and equipment, appropriately disposing of biological materials, and archiving data. The research assistant will collect, record, and analyze data and will receive training in and abide by professional ethics standards, including ensuring that electronic records comply with NSF requirements for data management. The incumbent will also help advance the educational intent of the grant by interacting with and assisting undergraduate and high-school students in the lab. In addition to the laboratory duties described above, the research associate will participate in lab discussions and meetings and will interact regularly with the PI.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree, significant coursework in a STEM-related field, and some laboratory experience. Among the specific skills required are an understanding of genetics and an ability to do PCR sufficient to allow the candidate to construct and identify the desired plant lines. The incumbent must have excellent organizational and communications skills, be proactive, and be capable of working independently and as part of a team. The incumbent must be extremely responsible and detail-oriented and must have strong research and verbal presentation skills. Knowledge of Word and Excel is required. Prior employment in a laboratory setting is desirable.
